A selection of photographs by Chicago, Illinois-based photographer Sasha Phyars-Burgess. Drawn from two separate series, these images will be included in her upcoming book with Capricious publishing (2021). “UNTITLED OR AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN” is an exploration of dance spaces as sites where black people—both straight and queer—are free to experience the fullness of their being. “UNTITLED PART II & III (WE ALL HAVE TO MAKE COMPROMISES),” shot in the U.S., Canada, and England, is about Phyars-Burgess’ interest in being able to look at people, making portraits, and, in her words, “trying my best to really see.” Both bodies of work are drawn together visually by her eye for nuance—in body language, light, and composition—offering honest and empathetic portraits of life.
